Disability Benefits

The Fund provides extensive disability benefits to ensure financial stability for members who are unable to work due to a disability.

What is seen as a disability?

Permanent disability: A condition that permanently prevents you from performing your occupation.

Temporary disability: A condition that temporarily prevents you from performing your occupation but is expected to improve over time.

To qualify for a disability benefit, you must be unable to perform your own or a similar occupation. Medical evidence is required to support your claim.

What is my disability benefit?

Monthly Disability Income:

Members receive a monthly disability income equal to 75% of their monthly pensionable salary, with a maximum monthly benefit of R165,000. This income helps to replace lost earnings due to disability.

Employer Waiver:

An additional 12% of the member's monthly pensionable salary is paid by the employer into the Fund as a waiver, covering the retirement contributions and risk benefit premiums. This ensures continuous coverage and contribution towards the member's retirement savings.

Waiting Period:

There is a three-month waiting period before disability benefits commence. During this time, the member's condition is assessed to confirm eligibility for the benefits.

Inflation Protection:

Disability benefits increase annually by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), limited to 4% per annum, to protect against inflation during the period of disablement.

Additional Services

Medical Assessments:

Travelling nurses visit workplaces to conduct medical tests required for death and disability cover, making it convenient for employees to complete necessary assessments without disrupting their daily routine.

HR911 Service:

A phone-based service that assists employers with managing disability income claims, providing support in handling employees with health conditions and ensuring smooth processing of claims.

Rehabilitation Programs:

The Fund may offer rehabilitation programs to support members in their recovery and potential return to work. These programs aim to enhance the member's physical and mental well-being.

Legal and Administrative Assistance:

Legal assistance is provided for handling necessary documentation, such as obtaining medical reports and certification of disability. This service ensures that all required paperwork is correctly completed and submitted.

When will my disability benefit cease?

Disability benefits cease at the earliest of:

  • Normal retirement age,
  •  Death, or
  • On recovery.
